Newbie Question: I'm still looking for a good 52-53 Hudson Hornet Four-Door. In my search I see that some interiors have the fine woodgrain painted finish (dash, sills), some are just painted one color, and some have a cloth or leatherette covered surface. What was factory correct, or was there an option in this regard? And if you know of a good car for sale, let me know! Thx.

How about a partial answer? 53's had three solid colors available, blue and green and maroon. Leatherette covered dash top. No wood/leather graining.

Hopefully others will respond with more details. 🙂

Hudson for '52 had either brown or blue woodgraining. Bob Drennen in Illinois is selling his '52. It has one of the nicest original brown interiors I've seen.

Thanks, Zack. Useful info. Is Bob's a 4-door? I can't find him in the directory. If it's a 4-door, perhaps you can provide a lead.

I think Bob might've let his membership expire. He's in the "past member" lookup. The car's a four door in two-tone green. I don't know too much about the car, and I've never driven it, but I know it's a three speed. Right now Drennan's keeping it at John O'Halloran's place. You may want to talk to him too. I'm not sure how'd they'd feel about me putting their phone numbers on the site, so if you're interested, I can e-mail you their respective phone numbers and e-mail address.

I understand. I found Bob's home number in the past members section and just left a message. If you can provide any further contact details for Bob and John via my email address below, it would be greatly appreciated. Looks like a sweet car. I take "three speed" to mean column shift manual without overdrive. Thanks for the info!

Picture is from a 51 Hornet, which was leather grain. The 1950 was as well, in both colors, blue/gray or that which is shown. The leatherette material was applied to the top part of the dash starting in 1951 to cut down on the glare which was a problem for the earlier stepdowns. The picture shows the base color, and the leathergrain pattern over that. You could actually see fingerprint smudges on the panel (this is a rear door panel) from the person that did the leathergraining. Starting in 1941, Hudson introduced Symphonic Styling to harmonize exterior and interior colors. Tan interiors/exterior cars had woodgrain dash as did gray interiors/blue or gray exterior. Green cars with green upholstery and exterior had solid green painted dashboards without woodgrain. Hudson stuck with this general application of dash design. I'm not sure if they abandoned all graining in 1952 and went only to solid colors. It seems likely as that is all I've sen on those cars.

Wow, that's a lot of hard-to-find info just for the asking. Thanks.
