I find myself in need of wheel cylinder rebuild kits for my 1952 Hudson Hornet. It has the stock brakes. Who sells them? Thanks.

Are they even a specialty items or are they something I could get from an auto parts store if I knew the right part numbers?

You can get one from any parts store, based on the diameter of the cylinder. Just take a cup and the spring to the store.

Thank you for the replies. Very informative. I am asking because my brakes are acting a bit funky and I am bring it into the shop and I am use to them asking about replacement parts since I typically can get Hudson parts faster and easier than they can. Hopefully not needed since the brakes were just redone a couple of years ago. Thanks again. B)

Thanks again.

Perhaps if you could define "a bit funky", someone might step in with a suggestion or two... The problem might, for instance, lie in the master cylinder, or elsewhere in the system.

They were soft (took a few pumps) and inconsistent (front left and right were pulling differently, but not consistently left or right). Typically the problems would fade after a bit of driving and stopping. I assumed that there was a bubble in the system and tried to bleed my brakes. It did not go well (I don't fit under the car well, my tools and experience were lacking, etc.) but I can say that the fluid level was good and the master cylinder put out pressure when pumped. The plan is to bring it into the mechanic and let him more methodically go through the brakes. Like I mentioned previously I had the brakes done by a Hudson guy only a couple of years ago so there should really be no mechanical failure yet. Having said that I am trying to ensure I have the bits and pieces on hand if they come back and say it is the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, etc.

Once again. Thank you for the help.

New wheel cylinders are readily available and cheaper than the cost of a kit and the labor to rebuild the old rusty, pitted ones. Put NEW ones in and they should be good for the next 7+years! as long as you flush the fluid at least once a year.

We have them in new cylinders sold by Norm Blackmer in the C I Chapter. Phone (909)-984-5544. Why fool around with rebuilts? Walt.

Once again thank you all for your responses. I got the Hornet into the shop and they bleed and dialed in the brakes and they seem to be working well now. Thankfully no new parts needed.

Unless I misunderstood a previous post.. I would like to mention that the original front mounts are round and the replacement AMC mounts are rectangular. Also the AMC mounts are a slight bit stiffer and may =transmit some more vibration to the frame. A plus is that they have a built in stop that keeps the left front of the engine from raising up under acceleration if it is broken. Throttle linkage and clutch linkage can jam and disconnect if the left front mount is defective. The AMC mounts have to be positioned correctly to keep fit. Unlike the originals that are symmetrical and fit both ways. Probably more than you wanted to know!
