Hello,
I have a 53 Hornet with a 308. I do not think my heat gauge is hooked up or at least I cannot see anywhere that it is connected to the engine. Can anyone lend any insight on where this should go and if an aftermarket gauge might be a good idea?
Thank you. Jason

Jason, the sending unit for the temperature gauge is located on the driver's side of the engine head, near the back. It should have a wire attached that runs to the gauge on the dash. It works by grounding the gauge... You can test the gauge by temporarily grounding the wire to the block or head. Jim

There is a hole in the cyl. head at the rear left side adjacent to throttle linkage, etc. This is where the temp sensor goes. The sensor is #TS4 at RockAuto.com and costs $7.49(if you need a new one). The hole must be plugged now or has the old sensor there.

I would like to install an additional heat gauge under the dash to show me exactly where I am for temp. The gauge I am looking at has the sending unit already attached and it does has a fitting that will thread into the existing sending unit port on the head. The sending unit on the new gauge is about 1/4" longer than the stock electric sending unit. Does anyone know if this will work? Do I have to worry about the extra length or maybe the port is not deep enough anyway.

Has anyone installed an aftermarket gauge like this and could offer some guidance?

Thanks for your help.
Jason

This looks like the triple gage set I have on the '53. I did not install but looks like any adapter you need is there. Certainly cheap enough. All my extra gages are connected. I do like seeing the numbers. Original temp gage is not; I will probably drill and tap to install the orig. sensor in the thermostat outlet and connect the wire.

Thank you.
Actually these are the gauges I am looking at too, but in chrome. I'm just wondering if it can be installed in the stock sending unit port on the rear driver side of the head?

Believe 1/4"x18 pipe thread; it is where mine is installed. You will coil-up the extra capillary along the firewall; do not kink.

The depth should not be a problem. 🙂

Jason, if you do get the gages, several things you should know that are not in instructions: the volt meter is adjustable; remove pull out light socket and use a small screwdriver w/ shank insulated to match a precision meter if voltage is not correct; can offset for drop in voltage between battery and ignition switch. Also, push all light bulbs in completely before pushing the rubber boots on.

Edit: Amazon has the chrome triple one for $29.00
