My Hudson was Delivered yesterday and I got the hinges oiled up enough to get the hood up and the first thing I noticed was this unusual device. I understand this might be pretty basic stuff to Hudson guys, but this is my first one.
Thanks
Steve

Some unusual type of coil?
It is mounted where the original coil was so I am assuming it is an aftermarket coil. do the wires (and coil wire from distributor) go to the distribtor? It appears so. Probably one of those 'miracle' coils from years ago advertised to increase your power and gas mileage, like all the other miracle products out there. Never seen one that looks like that.

Yes, that is a coil. I have a nice example here and will take a few photos. There is supposed to be a finned, screw-on cover over the light bulb, obviously to protect it. The bulb is not there for illumination but serves as ballast, I believe, to stabilize current flow in the ignition circuit.
My Dad told me it was off of my Grandfather's Willys Knight (the one my Mother took her driving test in) but I doubt that it was the original unit to that car.

Thank you. This car is going to be a long term project. It has been off the road since 1957. Probably the reason this aftermarket coil is still on there. Most of the insulation has been chewed off the wiring and I will need to replace the front floor pan.
