Hello all, I have recently bought a 1941 Hudson Commodore Six. Hind sight being 20/20, I probably should have sleeked the opinions here first, but I still think it was a good move. I am motivated by the fact alone that this car runs, drives and is very complete. I am waiting for the car to be shipped home and expect around the end of next week. I guess that will tell the tale as I plan a very detailed and thorough inspection. Then make some decisions. From what I have seen this isn't a high demand car but I haven't ever been with the majority on anything. I will have many questions that I am sure most of you will be able to help me with. My Dad was always a fan of the Hudson and had been turning wrenches a few years before this car was built. I wish he was still here to share it with me but in part he is through me. Please share your thoughts/opinions and feel free to point out whatever flaws or missing items. I haven't loaded but the one picture so far but have many and plan on adding them very soon. I at first thought this car was missing mirrors but from some information I have seen here I am not sure it ever had any. Looks like they were an option but please correct me if I am wrong.

Looks like a pretty solid car. If you get it on the road and looking good, you'll be surprised at the interest it draws at local cruise-ins, etc. Most folks recognize a stepdown era car, but few remember the '41-'47 models. I love the front end of the '41s . . . simple but very attractive.

David, looks like a very nice car. Bottom line is if you like it, then we like you owning it. While getting opinions from this site is always "informational", it may not answer your question (whether you should/should have buy/bought it). Like Park said, lots of members really like the look of the 41 and there are not many around. You can't go wrong with a Hudson and you wont find any better group of guys (and gals) than the Hudson Club. Keep us updated and just remember, its only money. You can't buy happiness but you can drive it.

Aaron

Thanks Park, I think it will be a lot of fun to be out in. The anticipation of getting it home is killing me. From what I can tell it needs a radio antenna along with mirrors. I see the mount just in front of the driver’s door. I have no idea how hard that will be to find.

Aaron, I so agree with your position on it all and I do like the car regardless of what others think. I just thought here it would be good to use the sharp eye of other Hudson owners to help me it making it the best I can. I will say I don't see much in the way of 41 Commodores in doing searches and that in itself makes it something special to me.

David,

I have 3 1941 Hudsons (business coupe, sedan, and 1/2T PU). They are all the short wheelbase cars, or Hudson Deluxe (Six). Your car looks amazingly complete with the radio (and you have most of the antenna, as I saw a part on the dash and on the outside cowl, driver's side). All you need for the antenna is the telescoping part and those have a plastic red ball on the end of them. I'm not sure where you're located, but the other 1941 collectors are Lee Pontius in Indiana and Charlie Dorsey in CA (I think Charlie is downsizing). I'm in WA state. Hope to see you car someday. BTW, the steering wheel for the Commodore with the horn ring and center is quite rare. Hard to find. You can get the paint code for your car from the passenger front door top hinge. It will have a letter stamped in it. It seems this car is a single color, probably what they called Hollywood Tan.

Sorry, probably Crystal Bronze (code is CC). Here's a link to the paint chips for 41 that I posted earlier. http://forum.hetclub.org/uploads/FileUpload/96/1a1bad5276a4cd929d4356734af55c.pdf

May I recommend that before you even start it, do a thorough check of oil levels in gearboxes, give it a good chassis lube job, taking note of those fittings that refuse to take grease, and remove/clean the engine oil pan/dipper tray. You'll likely be astounded at the crud that has accumulated in there.
Unless this car has been routinely cared for, it will pay off for sure.
Just my HO.
Frank

Thanks Tim, It good to know who has some of the other 41's.I am located in Norman Oklahoma, just south of OKC. I do hope to make some of the events and meet other Hudson owners. With you having three 41's, I am sure I will be seeking some advice soon. I think you are correct in the original color but I will get the paint code once it's in my shop. I do hope to find an original antenna. Do you know how many years and models used the same one? The completeness of this car is what really kept my attention. The more I looked the more I saw. The funny thing is when I came accross this car I was looking for something else. Thanks again.

Thank you Frank, that is very sound advice. I really want to take all the precautions I can before it has much run time on it. It looks like the pan bolts shouldn't be very hard to get to. I just want to take my time with this and think things through before putting much in to action. Do you have any advice on the API class rating of the recommended lube and oil?

David,

Great to see more pictures. It's a good sign that the lower splash guards haven't been trashed or removed from the car (around the pan of engine). I will send you a private message on this forum with contact info. I hope you can let me know what the serial number of your car is, and I can provide more info to you. I think you have a real find there; restored properly it will be a unique and uncommon car. The quality of Hudson built cars in this era is quite high.

If you haven't already done so, I recommend that you get your hands on a Mechanical Procedure Manual for it and do some reading before getting too deep into it. I'm sure others will chime in and tell us how to do that online. I'm too lazy.
As for oil recommendations, you'll find that there are almost as many opinions on that subject as there are Hudsons on the road. I have mine as well. That "Splasher" family of Hudson engines has its own set of peculiarities and sensitivities that isn't easily explained here.
I'll PM you.
Frank
