I have been bench testing the various parts of the OD system today. The solenoid works and the governor worked when I chucked into my drill.

I am tracing the wires tomorrow to make sure I have them right.

In looking at the wiring diagram....

In order to operate, the push-pull knob under the dash must be pushed, the kick down switch activated and the car be up to speed.

Do I have this right?

Yes....sort of.

The knob under the dash must be pushed to "enable" the overdrive (though this does not actually engage it). The knob can be pushed in all the time, or before you start the car, or even as you are driving down the road.
To engage overdrive, you must have the knob pushed in AND must have attained the proper kick-in speed (which is up around 30-35 mph). At that point, merely let up on the accelerator until you hear a thunk, then push the accelerator back down to its former position (to maintain your speed, that is).

The kickdown switch is NOT activated in order to engage the overdrive. The kickdown switch is pressed when you're IN overdrive and wish to kick down to the next-lower gear.

(By the way: you could, in fact, engage overdrive when you are in second gear, if you had reached the proper kick-in speed, and then you'd be in "second overdrive" which is somewhere between second and third gear.)

Thank you. I will finish checking the wiring today just to be sure nothing is wrong there.

With the OD Knob pushed into that means I am "free wheeling" as well, correct?

That's right, Ed. It'll free-wheel until you reach OD cut-in speed and come off the throttle to let the OD engage.

Thank you, Park and Jon. Getting the wiring correct due to the rotten harness it had was my concern. Now that I think it is correct, I will tilt the car to the driver's side and refill the OD after losing gear oil when I took out the governor.
