Haven't seen this mentioned before, but haven't looked at everything yet.
A thermostat that has a twice larger opening(area) than a normal 63mm thermostat. Mr Gasket makes them{Stant does not}. They are available at Jegs.com. The 160 degree is #720-4366; also 180 degree is available. These are generally for 1955-1976 Chysler V-8 products and are 63mm{2.5"} wide. Cannot say that normal is restrictive, nor do I know if shrouded originals are. FYI only. I tested in 160 degree water mainly to see how it opened-and it does fine all the way around the edge for max flow. 😛

I have found that the Stants do restrict flow and that also changes the temp of the engine. It may open at 160 but the restricted flow will not maintain 160 engine temp. I bore holes around the edge to increase flow. I keep boring holes until I get the desired engine temp. A friend that runs a 454 Chevy in a truck told me about the trick. Hope this helps. LHud
Plenty of flow with Walt's kit. My car is cool!
What thermostat does Walt use?
I have ZERO bypass--we live in the South and don't drive much in the winter anyhow~~
That is the reason I make my by pass kit. Too much flow and the water does not cool in the radiator and re enters the block still hot. Try driving it on a 80 to 90 degree day and you will vapor lock or boil over. With my set up I drove to Oklahoma in 113 degree weather, with air condition on and never had VAPOR LOCK or boil over. To each his own. My kit is $99.00 and includes S&H priority mail. Come with a thermostat. I've sold them all over the world where there are Hudson's, and get thanked. Walt.
