Hello my name is John, im 27 and im not new to old cars by any means. i grew up attending many car shows. my father was a founding member of the Crosley Automobile Club, i learned to drive with his 1950 Hotshot and 1949 station wagon. I was formerly a moderator on the forum of the Tucker Auto Club of America until the forum was disbanded.
The reason im here is that when my father passed away I inherited his 1953 Hudson Hornet. he purchased this hornet in 1973 after his beloved 57 ford was destroyed by vandals. dad worked on the Hornet for several years until he got side tracked by having a family. once we were old enough that he could resume working on the Hudson he became disabled and wasnt able to do much of anything on it. I dont know much about the car so im hoping that you all can help me to learn about it.
the things i know
the block is Bored .040 over.
it has light weight Jan's racing pistons.
it has what was the highest performance cam available at the time.
Is equipped with Twin H
Has a 232 head installed for higher compression.
dad also converted the car over to 12 volt for convenience
over the past 4 weeks my brother and i have gotten the Hudson from a pile of parts in the garage into a drivable car. its still far from finished but its the only Hudson Hornet in my City. though there are 2 other Hudson in the area that i know of a 48 Commodore and a 54 Jet.
Here are a few pics of my Hudson.
Awesome! Welcome. Where are you located?
Thank You, im just south west of Cleveland in Brookpark ohio.
You may also wish to post this information at the Club's "Open Forum" which it inherited earlier this year. Never hurts to increase your coverage, when it comes to tech questions!
Welcome to the Hudson world, John, and congrat's for rescuing that Hornet instead of selling or trashing it. Looks good, and sounds like you'll soon have it running well. In the process, there's hardly a question you can't get answered here on the two forums (fora?)
Thanks for the welcome and the info about the other forum. I'm excited to be working on this car and getting it ready. The one thing I'm trying to learn is how do the oil bath air cleaners Mount to the engine? I know how they Mount on the carb but where do the brackets that attach to the head sit on the air cleaners?
Welcome aboard the craziest car club around - it's more of a family club that happens to like old cars - in this case those built by Hudson. National meets are more like family reunions reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.
I've been in the club for 45 years and mostly I've never had a Hudson product. I'm still hanging around agitating everybody and they haven't tossed me out yet - which should tell you something.
In addition to the virtual library run by John O'Halloran there is also an online library - http://hetclub.org/burr/lithomepage.htm . New material is always being uploaded to this resource.
Glad to have you join our happy little group.

John, the oil bath twin h air cleaner brackets are different than the non oil bath air cleaner brackets. The brackets dont look hard to make so I plan to do this for my air cleaners. The picture shows the postitioning of the brackets and believe they just bolt to the head. Wish I had a better picture and some demensions but this is all I have to go on myself. Doug

Sorry double post
Thank you for the info, the brackets I have don't look like that. I'll have to find some or make some. One thing I need to know is how do the brackets attach to the air cleaners? Or do the cleaners simply just sit on the brackets.
The long through bolt that holds the filter parts together must be loosened a bit. The brackets slide in between the bottom of the base and the large washer. Hope that makes sense!

Yes, you see the u shaped opening at the end of eash bracket, that would slip under the bolt head and washer on the air cleaner just described by Ric above. Doug
That makes total sense, looks like I'll be making some brackets soon. Thanks alot for the information.
