I think I have a throwout bearing leak in my 53 Hornet and would like to replace the whole collar assembly. The instructions in the mechanical procedure manual require jacking up the engine and removing the bell housing. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the collar assembly without taking off the bell housing. The transmission would be removed of course, but is there any way to reach inside the bell housing and remove the collar and bearing. Just hoping.

YOU MUST REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION AND THE BELL HOUSING THE THROW OUT BEARING AND IT'S SEALS GO AROUND THE TRANSMISSIONS MAIN SHAFT IT IS MOUNTED IN THE PRESSURE PLATES REAR COLLAR IT'S NOT A SMALL JOB
Why couldn't one just remove the trans/throw out bearing? This is a 53, right?
Paul is right. be sure to replace with a modern seal type bearing available through Wildrick Restorations.
The bearing sits in front of the throwout yoke, and is innacessible unless you remove the bell housing.
Thanks for all the responses. I guess I'll have to find someone with a lift and other heavy duty equipment. Or maybe I'll just live with it and change the clutch fluid more often.
Again, thanks to all.
