Well, I just took the plunge: I bought my first Hudson: a 1954 Wasp. I'm super, super excited. Now just a short, 4000 mile drive home to Alaska with the wife and dog...

She's got a 308, 3 speed with overdrive, and several things that make her a car. Working on a name for her...

Any Hudson owners between Chicago and Anchorage want to have dinner?

Be sure to carry an extra water pump and fuel pump just in case!
take lots of pictures and post them during the trip if you can!

Comment: Know he is not home to do this, but installing an electric fuel pump at the gas tank {with a switch under dash} is a suggested thing to do. Can get 6 volt or 12 volt; solves a fuel pump failure problem, solves a vapor lock problem, and will prime carb(s) if needed. Can do for about $35. easily. Consider ! Add filter before pump.

The previous owner was kind enough to install an electric fuel pump already. He was setting the car up to do a route 66 trip with his dad, but his father passed away a few years ago and the never had the chance to go. But he did make some changes for a longer trip (fuel pump, bigger brakes).

Now I'm just trying to figure out how to make my iPod go on a 1950s AM radio. Not sure I'll have much luck with that.. 🙂

I'm carrying a basic tool set (wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers), a set of points and a condenser, an extra headlight, and some hudsonite clutch fluid. Is there anything else I am likely to want?

Are you a member of the H-E-T? If so, consult your roster. The little "crossed hammer and wrench" symbol by certain names, denotes a member of the "Tourist Emergency Help" group: These people are willing to lend a helping hand if you break down. A place to stow your car or work on it, a recommendation on local "old car" mechanics -- it all depends upon the volunteer, as to what he offers.

Something I recently found out: a 1/16" allen wrench is needed to remove the light switch(on a '53). If a wire slips off the connector, etc. you might need to pull the switch back to reach it. So a good one will be going in my tool bag; a cheap one will round off.

Driving the Alcan was always on my list of road trips - never made it and probably won't.
It's my understanding that most, if not all, of it is now paved. Sort of takes the adventure out of it.
But as you say the scenery is magnificant along that long lonely road, from the pictures I've seen.
Hats off to the military for building the road in the first place. It was an awesome job.

Try tunein.com - they have Ipod aps, I believe. While I listen mostly to Swing and Big Band I imagine they probably have '50s stuff too you can download.

About half way there, and things are going well. Mostly...

Woke up on the first day to find an inch of water on the floor. I guess the weatherstripping needs sorted out. And the trunk flew open at 70 miles an hour. That was a bit of welding and adjusting on the fly. And the radiator sprung a leak, which was fixed with a bit of solder.

Otherwise, it's been awesome. Driving across North Dakota today. The sky was amazing and got some short hikes in. Can't beat the adventure!

Good luck on your trip, Ben! With a 308 I'm sure that Wasp really flies!
