Well, it's getting close to decision time, choosing an under-dash unit for a 53 Hornet Sedan. I will be thoroughly insulating the sedan to assist the A/C. I would like the unit to do the following...
1. Effectively cool all occupants, including back seat
2. Install with the best fit and least modification of glovebox, heater, and other under-dash components
3. Be as hidden as possible, or look period correct
I would appreciate it if those with experience in this area chime in with makes AND models that have worked well. So far my top considerations are
Vintage Air Mark iV Underdash- period correct, little mods, but can it cool the folks in the back seat?
Vintage Air Gen II, Super, Gen Iv?
Old air Hurricane 1000- fits well under the dash with little mods, but is not very hidden
Please help with specific experiences.
thanks
Dave

Vintage unit in '53; not hidden but cools entire car.

Additional in car photo and photo of compressor.

Richard, that is the same unit we have in our 53..Still have full use of the heater, and the compressor is just like yours. Cools the complete car and Margaret has to put her heavy sweater on. Going to Oklahoma, 113 degrees, it kept the car at 60 degrees. Vintage Air in Texas. One thing I found, just crack the vent open and it works better, blends outside air, just like all cars that have air. Walt.
Sorry about not paying attention to categories.
I like this unit guys. Make and model?

Ok guys, looks like I found it. Slim Line system. Model 11301-VUX-A, heat and cool. Do you guys retain a functioning Hudson heater and defrost? Would there be fitment issues going to a heat-cool-defrost system? If the original heater works why not a cool-only? I'd appreciate your thoughts
Dave
I agree with Richard and Walt ... don't replace the original heater. I regret doing that in my installation. Heater in the big A/C unit doesn't distribute the heat as well as the original. Only advantage is better forced air supply to the defrost outlets.

I would have loved to use that type unit, Richard, but the big firewall-mounted units had more cooling power, and I figured I'd need that for a convertible.
Thank you all, will do cool-only, retain the heater box. I like the looks of this unit.
