I feel a bit foolish asking this question. Where is the oil filter housing located on the 51 Hornet?
Just drained out really old black oil from pan of newly arrived Hornet. Had ordered a new filter cartridge but cannot locate the housing. Maybe you will tell me i take off the oil pump housing cover to replace it? I am new to the Hornet so go easy on me! My other classic is a 70 280sl. thanks. Gary
Gary,
If you don't see the canister above and rear of the distributor, it doesn't have one. It's just a bypass filter and is commonly thought to be just a little better than no filter at all. I suspect W.M. will jump in here and tell you about his high-flow bypass set-up or you might consider watching for my Full Flow conversion available in the near future.

E-mail Walt Mordenti at hetwaltmordenti@aol.com, drop the het as that is there to fool the spamers. I will sent you a photo for location and looks. Walt.
Frank - looked at your project. Looking forward to seeing more. I was close when I mentioned taking off the oil pump cover!
Walt - you seemed to be very knowledgable and I would like to get the same life out of my Hudson as you have got from yours. When I drained the oil I saw what looked like some silvery relics of an oil additive (maybe some old slick 50). I was hoping to just drain the oil and refill. Do you think I should drop and clean the oil pan? Oh the things we find en route to fixing other things! Thanks. Gary
Did you receive my 2 messages? Walt
Gary- Oil filters were usually accessories that cost extra, my Wasp didn't have one so I added a partial flow unit. They were all basically the same, either Fram #4 or #3 filter element. Mine was from a Studebaker; I cleaned and painted it in "Fram" orange and black.
Bruce,
My Pacemaker did have the oil filter installed, but I did the same thing. Just look at any number of pictures of these engines and you can see where they are installed. usually with a bracked using head bolts on the driver side closer to the firewall. Naturally, kind of hard to mount it on the side with the intake/exhaust manifold.
Thanks for the assistance. I feel less foolish now that I understand why I could not find something that was not there. Will be putting on a filter. Gary
