My '52 Hudson Hornet has back-up lights. Are they original to the car? They are Unity brand. Also where is the back-up light switch located?
I am looking for the "Control Switch" located on the O/D rail. (#52 on the parts diagram, page 9-2 in the 1952 Hudson Mechanical Procedure manual) Mine has had some pretty hard action. Does anyone know of one for sale?
Thanks for your help.
Tom
Tom, the backup lights were, I believe, a Hudson approved dealer-installed accessory, so they could be original. My former '51 coupe had them, and there was a pull-push switch under the dash. It's possible Hudson didn't provide an "automatic" switch, especially on the stick-shift cars.
As for the OD lockout switch, check with VanPelt Sales in Ohio, provider of OD parts. I just spoke with him, and he vconfirmed these critters are hard to find (not made anymore). He has three used ones in stock. 1-800-299-7496.
Otherwise, you can just connect the two wires together, bypassing that switch. As long as you have the standard hookup, using the governor, it's going to ensure the OD is off at low speed or stopped, when you want to shift into reverse. If the switch is mechanically damaged, you can just remove it and make a little cover plate and gasket.
The only downside of deleting the switch is that when driving with the OD locked out (OD control knob pulled out), the solenoid will be energized when you're above cut-in speed, trying to put you in OD. That won't damage it, however, since it's designed to be energized for long periods. As an alternative, it wouldn't be very difficult to improvise a bracket and small switch that would open the circuit when the lever on the OD unit it full forward (i.e., mechanically locked out)
