Am wishing to have the "H" end cap of the electric hand refinished. Am I correct in having it nickel plated? Chrome just looks to bright to me.
Sheldon, I did the Electric Hand pieces in chrome on my former '36. Looked fine and was a bit less easy to scratch. Based on the ones I've seen, I think they were chromed originally.
If you do decide to got with nickel, be sure the plater knows you want polished nickel, not "brushed" nickel finish.
When you get parts that have been nickel plated back they will look like chrome plating 'till they age for a while!
:cheer:
Well that didn't work out well. I was intending to mention that when I was fixing up my 1923 Hudson I had the headlight rims nickel plated because that was the original way. However, I was told that Hudson went to chrome toward the end of the twenties so any bright work for a thirties car I believe would be chrome

Geoff, You are correct. Generally nickel plating went away about 1929-31. Chrome plating then came in and really has not left. Nickel came in about 1915 replacing brass.
The issue with nickel plating is that it requires upkeep, ie polishing to keep the shine or it will oxidize and get dull. One option is to have the freshly nickeled parts powder coated with a clear coating.
As for interior plated parts, most Hudson products still used Nickel into the late thirties in interior door handles and bezels, ect.

1929 was the first year Hudson used chrome on the exterior fittings, but nickel was used inside up to 1939 at least.
