I'm working with a guy sending text messages so its hard to get good pix and info but this is what I have so far.
Looks to be a 308 block
It has 1/2 in studs
cannot find a serial number
head is 308
twin H
possible yellow paint under the red
I think this is a 1953 cast, can someone confirm that for me?
Could this be a JC Whitney motor?
Appreciate any help.
1953 Hornet 308 cast in April of 1953. J.C.Whitney motors were all left overs from Kenosha, or Stokes Marine in Coldwater Mich. Casting number for these would be 532500.
Would you agree this motor probably isn't original with 1/2in studs? guessing a machine shop drilled, tapped and install the 1/2in studs?
All I've found is 7x motors in 53 had 1/2in. all others had 7/16.
55 and 56 had 1/2in studs.
Is the above correct?
YES ALL 7X MOTORS HAVE 1/2 STUDS AS DO ALL 55,56 MOTORS I HAVE SEEN OTHER THAT SOME ONE HAS TAPED OUT TO 1/2 ALSO
thanks Paul
So since this has no serial number on it do you guys think it could be a replacement 308 engine?
When we had to change an engine on warranty, we were suppose to stamp the old serial number on the replacement and destroy the old engine, which never happened as we sold the old engine. Walt.

Back in the 70's I changed a couple 308's to 1/2" studs - I'd put that right up there with restoring the rear part of the perimeter frame!!! I wore out 3 diamond tipped drill bits and broke about a half dozen taps.
Fun.
